The R36S is one of the most popular budget retro handhelds going, and for good reason. But the marketing around this class of device sets the wrong expectations. You'll see "plays everything" and enormous game counts thrown around. Neither is a useful way to decide whether it's the right handheld for you.
This guide is the honest version: what the R36S handles well, where it struggles, and where it stops entirely.
The chip is the whole story
The R36S runs a RockChip RK3326. That matters more than the brand on the shell or the firmware it ships with, because emulation performance is tied almost entirely to the processor. The RK3326 is well understood at this point, with years of community testing behind it, so we know exactly where the ceiling sits.
What it handles brilliantly
These run at full speed with no tinkering. Turn it on and play.
- 8-bit era systems. Full compatibility. Nothing at this performance level troubles the chip.
- 16-bit era consoles and handhelds. Near perfect. This is the sweet spot for a device like this.
- Early 32-bit disc-based systems. The headline capability. The vast majority of that library is comfortably playable, though a handful of demanding 3D titles can dip in busy scenes.
- Arcade hardware up to the mid 1990s. Strong across most boards from that era.
If your goal is 16-bit and early 32-bit gaming, the R36S is the right device at the right price. That's the honest recommendation.
What works, with caveats
Early 3D cartridge consoles
Playable but inconsistent. Simpler titles generally run at acceptable speed. Anything with heavy particle effects or complex geometry drops frames noticeably. Expect to adjust settings per game rather than plug and play.
Dual-screen handhelds
Compatibility is patchy. A subset of the library runs well, but plenty of titles that appear fine will glitch on audio or stutter in later levels. Check community compatibility lists before counting on a specific game.
Mid-90s disc systems with complex architecture
A handful of titles run. Most don't. The hardware those games were written for was notoriously awkward, and it doesn't translate well at this chip level. Not a primary use case.
What to skip
These won't run at playable speed on the R36S, and no amount of settings tweaking changes that:
- Sixth-generation disc consoles
- Sixth-generation optical-disc systems from the same era
- Anything from the seventh generation onward
The R36S is a retro device and performs like one. If you need more headroom than the RK3326 offers, you're looking at a different class of hardware running a full desktop OS, at several times the price.
Where the games come from
This is the part most guides skirt around, so here it is plainly.
The R36S is emulation hardware. It runs open-source emulator software, and games load as files onto the MicroSD card. You drag and drop them across from your computer. There's nothing to install and no account to make.
Two legitimate sources worth knowing about. There's a large and genuinely good homebrew and open-source scene making original games specifically for handhelds like this one, much of it free. And if you still have your old collection sitting in a cupboard, tools exist to make your own backups from discs and cartridges you already own.
What you put on the card is yours. So is the device. Nobody can take either off you later, which is more than can be said for most digital libraries.
Firmware: use ROCKNIX
ROCKNIX is the community's recommended operating system for this device, and it's what we'd point you at. It's actively maintained, updated regularly, and has the best per-system emulator configuration available for the R36S.
AmberELEC gets mentioned as an alternative but has been discontinued and no longer receives updates. UnofficialOS exists but has known stability issues on genuine R36S hardware. ROCKNIX is the one.
Four things worth doing
- Use per-game settings for the early 3D stuff. There's no universal configuration that works across that whole library. ROCKNIX lets you save settings per title, which is how most people get it running reliably.
- Turn on save states. Games that originally had no save function can now be saved anywhere. Use it.
- Run the screen at 70 to 80 percent brightness. The IPS panel is bright enough that full brightness drains the battery fast. Dropping it slightly roughly doubles your session length with no visible difference.
- Charge it fully before the first session. Li-ion cells last longer for it.
The bottom line
The R36S is an honest device. It does exactly what the hardware allows, and for 16-bit and early 32-bit gaming it's genuinely excellent. The limitations are real, well understood, and not hidden anywhere in this guide.
Buy it knowing what it is and it won't disappoint. Buy it expecting it to run everything and it will.
